Linocuts are a type of relief print. The artist carves away parts of the surface of a block of artist’s linoleum. The raised parts that are left are what will make the picture. The artist rolls ink over the raised portions, flops a piece of paper down on the wet ink, rubs the back of the paper to make the ink transfer to the paper, and voila, there’s your print. Of course, with multi-color prints, it gets more complicated and more challenging.
